Hello and good morning, friends, and before you interject I do mean that it is a good morning whether you want it or not. 🙂
Welcome to this little slice of Middle Earth. Within the pages hereafter you shall find a story…each moment buoyed by a song in the heart and blazed by the fall of measured steps, unrelenting until all present is memory and all past is legend.
The fulcrum of our journey to Tolkien’s hallowed world is a PC game called Lord of the Rings Online, an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) formerly by Turbine Entertainment and now owned by Standing Stone Games.
Through its visage we shall explore the finest digital representation of Middle Earth ever created, one that allows its players to experience all the breadth and wonder of Tolkien’s world and the lore therein.
We shall be there as the Fellowship prepares to depart Rivendell for the Misty Mountains cold, and we shall join our steel with choked air as the Uruk-hai storm the walls of Helm’s Deep.
Every facet of this tale will unfold from the perspective a new character I create within the game. Though I do reserve the possibility of a guest post here or there!
As it is we will start at level 1, those hesitant first steps, our own story unfurling in support of the Fellowship as they carve their path on that most desperate of missions. It will not end until we walk upon the shadowed ground of Mordor itself, standing in arm and bound by purpose with Aragorn’s army as it attempts to draw Sauron’s hateful gaze.
I will make it my goal to post one chapter a week, but for times when I’m feeling inspired and free time permits, you might see more than that. It all depends upon the tide that each day brings. I hope you’ll share each moment with me and find some hint of delight in the journey.
As lovers and dreamers, poets and readers, the flock of the earth both gentle and furious… it is our duty to escape together, you and I. With ale in hand and sword in scabbard we walk.
Woe to the earth beneath our feet.
“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”
― J.R.R. Tolkien
